Meet Our Dental Team

Nigel Parkash
Dentistry

Dental Surgeon (BDS, MJDF RCS Eng)

Nigel provides the full range of NHS and private dental treatments.

Nigel joined our Jesmond team as a foundation dentist following his graduation from Newcastle University in 2013. After completing his foundation year with us, Nigel stayed on at the practice as an associate.

He has a particular interest in aesthetic restorative dentistry such as whitening, composite restorations (white fillings), crowns and veneers (porcelain and composite) as well as the alignment of teeth, being a certified Invisalign and Inman Aligner practitioner. Nigel also has a passion for facial aesthetics and is a member of our Honour Health Skin team.

Nigel holds his MJDF from the Royal College of Surgeons of England (2014) and is regularly undergoing continued professional development to update and further advance his skills. He is currently undertaking a course in Advanced Operative Aesthetic and Restorative Dentistry with Aspire Dental Academy based in London as well as the Facilitated Learning in Healthcare Practice – Accredited by the Academy of Medical Educators Certificate at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN).

Nigel also enjoys the teaching aspect of dentistry and since January 2016, he has taught and supervised third year and final year students at Newcastle Dental Hospital every Tuesday. Further to this, from September of this year, Nigel will become a joint foundation trainer for a newly qualified dentist at the practice.

As well as being busy with the clinical and teaching aspects of dentistry, he is also is a member of the BDA Northern Counties branch committee, the Chair of the BDA Young Dentists Committee, and a member of the North of Tyne Local Dental Committee (LDC).

Outside of work, Nigel loves spending time with friends socially, eating out and travelling. He travelled South America for two months, where he spent two weeks providing dental care in schools and at an orphanage in Peru.

Patrick Gaunt
Dentistry

Dental Surgeon (BDS)

Patrick provides the full range of NHS and private dental treatments.

 Patrick has been with us since the start of his career, having joined our Stanley practice as a foundation dentist in 2013, following his graduation from Newcastle University.

His post-graduate studies include sedation and implant surgery. He has also studied physiotherapy of the jaw joints and muscles for TMD (painful jaw).

Patrick has completed extra training in oral and maxillofacial surgery – cancer, trauma and removal of wisdom teeth.

He is particularly interested in surgical treatments – wisdom teeth removal, management of chronic jaw problems and restorative dentistry.

In his leisure time, Patrick likes to cycle, play golf and guitar.

Richard Leck
Dentistry

Dental Surgeon (BDS, MFDS RCPS Glasg, PGCertClinEd)

Richard provides the full range of NHS and private dental treatments.

Richard graduated from Newcastle University in 2010 and gained a Merit in Academic Dentistry. He was awarded The James Coltman Prize in Operative Dentistry for his Restorative Dentistry case work.

After completing Vocational Training in NHS general dental practice, Richard sought experience in Special Care Dentistry with the Community Dental Service. He went on to develop his surgical skills as a Senior House Officer in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at The Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle and The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.

In 2012 Richard joined the Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians (RCPS) of Glasgow as a Member of the Faculty of Dental Surgeons (MFDS), and he joined our Jesmond team in August 2013.

In 2014, Richard received a CertClin.Ed from the University of Central Lancashire, and he has since enjoyed working as an educational trainer for foundation dentists, as well as organising our dentists’ regular study clubs. Richard is also Treasurer for the British Dental Association (BDA) Northern Counties Branch, and a committee member of the North of Tyne Local Dental Committee (LDC).

He is a member of the North East Private Dentists, which hold Continuing Professional Development events and encourage excellence amongst dental professionals.

Richard has a particular interest in replacing old metal fillings with new ‘invisible’ tooth-coloured fillings. He is a certified Invisalign practitioner, and has transformed patients’ smiles using this almost invisible orthodontic treatment.

Away from surgery, Richard likes to keep fit and healthy and enjoys cycling and running. He is a keen musician and plays the drums in a band, The Vellocette along with fellow dentist David Lawler.

Omar Al-Naimi
Dentistry

Omar provides the full range of NHS and private dental treatments.

 

Omar graduated from Baghdad University in 1994 and has gained extensive experience as a general dental practitioner. He completed an MSc in Restorative Dentistry (with Distinction) in 2001, followed by a PhD in Dental Materials from Newcastle University (2005), a Post Graduate Certificate in Clinical Implant Dentistry (2014), a Post Graduate Certificate in Clinical Education (2014) and became a certified Invisalign practitioner in July 2016.

 

Prior to joining Honour Health, Omar worked in three dental practices across Newcastle and Durham, before becoming an associate at our team in Jesmond in September 2013. He is a member of the Local Dental Committee (LDC), is an educational trainer for foundation dentists, and organises our dentists’ peer-led study clubs.

Omar is particularly interested in transforming patients’ smiles and improving their confidence through aesthetic dentistry, restorative dentistry (including root canal therapy), implants and Invisalign.

Outside of work, Omar is enthusiastic about maintaining his fitness, and his hobbies include running, cycling and swimming. He regularly takes part in sporting events to raise money for national and international charities. Omar also has a passion for art, design, painting and sculpture, and has exhibited in local galleries.

Claire Towers
Dentistry

Claire provides the full range of NHS and private dental treatments.

Claire is a member of the Local Dental Committee (LDC) and has worked in the dental industry for almost 20 years, having begun her career in 1998 as a dental nurse. She gained extensive experience in NHS and private practices in the North East, and decided to study to become a dental surgeon in 2007.

Claire has been a member of our Jesmond team since she graduated from Newcastle University in 2012. She completed her post-graduate training with us, and then became an associate at the practice.

Her dental nursing background has proved to be invaluable throughout her time with us, and it is a continual asset to the way she engages with her patients.

In particular, Claire enjoys treating nervous patients, by putting them at ease when they visit the practice, and helping restore them to good health.

Claire has great interest in aesthetic restorations, white fillings, whitening and restoring implants. She is a certified Invisalign practitioner and has had excellent results in transforming patients’ smiles with this almost invisible orthodontic treatment.

Away from surgery, Claire enjoys Muay Thai (martial arts), spending time with family and friends, and taking her three little dogs to the beach.

Gulshan Dhanoya

Gulshan provides the full range of NHS and private dental treatments.

Gulshan studied Dentistry at Universidad CEU Cardenal Herrera, Valencia (Vlc) Spain and joined us in September 2016 following her graduation. Prior to that, Gulshan gained extensive experience at the practice in both dental nursing and dental therapy.

Gulshan works across our Jesmond and Stanley practices and has a particular interest in brightening patients’ smiles through teeth whitening (both at-home and in-surgery treatments).

In her spare time, Gulshan enjoys spending time with family and friends, travelling, photography and playing netball.

Gulshan is also passionate about writing, and runs her own blog – www.dentalife.co.uk – where she shares topical information about aesthetic dentistry and facial aesthetics.

Onkar Dhanoya
Dentistry

Onkar graduated as a dental surgeon from Newcastle University in 1985 and has been principal dental surgeon at Honour Health (formerly the Osborne Dental Group) since 1986.

Katherine Lawrence
Dentistry

Katherine provides the full range of private dental treatments at our Ponteland practice.

Katherine has been a member of our Ponteland team since March 2015. She graduated from Newcastle University 2011 with a Merit in clinical dentistry and was presented with the Joan Weyman Award in recognition of her achievements during her studies.

She completed General Professional Training following graduation including experience within restorative dentistry, oral surgery, oral medicine, sedation and emergency dentistry.

Katherine worked for a year as a Senior House Officer within oral and maxillofacial surgery unit. Since then, she has worked within the Community Dental Service providing treatment for anxious children and adults, medically compromised patients and those with special needs.

Katherine has also worked within a general practice and as an associate clinical lecturer at Newcastle Dental Hospital, teaching and supervising students on the dental emergency clinic.

She holds membership of of the Faculty of Dental Surgery (2012) Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh and is currently studying at Newcastle University to complete Conscious Sedation in Dentistry PGDip.

Katherine is a certified Invisalign practitioner. She particularly enjoys treating anxious patients and improving patients’ smiles and confidence.

Outside of work Katherine enjoys dining out, visiting the theatre and planning trips away.

Jonathon Tagger
Dentistry

Jonathon provides the full range of NHS and private dental treatments.

Jonathon joined our Jesmond team as a foundation dentist in September 2016, following his graduation from Sheffield University. After completing his foundation year with us, he stayed on at Honour Health as an associate, working at our Stanley practice.

Jonathon has a particular interest in root canal treatments, as well as aesthetic treatments such as whitening and composites. He is always looking for further ways to advance his professional development, and he plans to sit the Faculty of General Dental Practice (FGDP) exam in the next year.

Outside of work, Jonathan loves sports –particularly running, basketball, football and tennis. He is a Newcastle United FC supporter and tries to get to most home games.

James Hoyle
Dentistry

James provides the full range of NHS and private dental treatments.

He studied at Newcastle University, graduating in 2016, and joined our Stanley team in September 2017.

James has a particular interest in composite work and aesthetics, and is always looking for ways to further his skills. He is planning to embark on several courses in the near future, including an orthodontics course.

Outside of work, James enjoys eating out, travelling and keeping fit – particularly going to the gym and walking in the Lake District.

Caroline Short
Dental Hygiene

Dental Therapist

Caroline joined Honour Health in March 2016 and works as a dental therapist at both our Jesmond and Ponteland practices.

Caroline studied her Diploma in Dental Hygiene & Therapy at Newcastle University, graduating in December 2015.  She worked as a dental nurse for eight years prior to becoming a dental therapist, giving her an excellent insight into the world of dentistry, and she is a member of the British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy.

Caroline likes to stay up-to-date in her clinical recommendations to patients by regularly liaising with dental representatives about new products and procedures, and evaluating the clinical evidence used to endorse them. As her role focuses on managing and promoting good oral hygiene practices, she is particularly interested in novel plaque-removal products such as toothbrushes and interdental cleaning aids.

In the short-term, Caroline is planning to expand her clinical repertoire to include tooth whitening, and, in the long-term, she aims to be involved in dental research and education.

Outside of work, Caroline’s little boy keeps her on her toes, and they love going on adventures! Caroline is passionate about animal welfare and rights, and she follows a vegetarian diet. She also loves running and has recently taken up yoga, which she believes not only helps with strength and flexibility, but offers a fantastic opportunity for self-reflection and stress-relief after a busy day!

Jay-Dee Hodgson (née Lorimer)
Dental Hygiene

Dental Therapist

Jay-Dee joined us in August 2017 and works at our Jesmond practice. She studied at Newcastle University School of Dental Sciences and graduated in December 2014 with a Diploma in Dental Hygiene and Therapy.

Jay-Dee enjoys using our EMS Airflow system for brightening smiles and treating gingivitis and periodontitis in the most comfortable manner, especially for anxious patients. She has a particular interest in the dental health of children, and believes oral health education should be installed from a young age, as it is key to minimising dental and many general health problems.

Jay-Dee is a member of The British Society of Periodontology and The British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy, and she undertakes continual professional development to keep up to date with the forward movement of the profession. Jay-Dee is taking an additional course in the maintenance of dental implants.

Outside of work, Jay-Dee enjoys spending precious time with family and friends. She loves to travel when time allows – especially sailing the Greek Islands.

Claire McAdam
Dental Hygiene

Dental Therapist

Claire joined Honour Health in April 2018 and works as a dental therapist at our Stanley practice. She studied at Dundee University, graduating with a BSc in Oral Health Sciences in May 2013, and is a member of the British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy.

Claire loves working with our EMS Airflow system to improve patients’ oral health and brighten their smiles. She also enjoys working with children and helping them to become less anxious about dental treatment.

Claire is always working to further her knowledge, and enjoys attending industry conferences, the latest one being the European Federation of Periodontology Conference – EuroPerio – in Amsterdam.

Outside of work, Claire is taking ice skating lessons, enjoys going to the gym and spending time with friends.

Laura Nicklas

Patient Care Coordinator

Laura joined Honour Health’s Stanley practice in February 2015 as a receptionist, and became our patient care coordinator in December 2016.

Laura began working aged 16 when she started an apprenticeship in Business Administration, and has since built up a wealth of experience in patient-facing roles.

It is Laura’s job to:

  • welcome patients to our Stanley practice
  • provide information about the services we offer
  • ensure that patients understand their treatment plans and the stages involved
  • explain available payment options to patients

Essentially, Laura is a ‘buddy’ who ensures that our patients are fully comfortable with their treatment at every stage of the process, and who is available to speak to if our patients have any queries.

Within her role, Laura most enjoys getting to know our patients and helping them on their journeys to improve their oral health and become happier with their smiles.

Outside of work, Laura enjoys spending time with family and friends, and long walks with her dog Ralph.

Stephen Ward

Stephen graduated from Newcastle University with Merit in both clinical and academic dentistry and joined our team as a foundation dentist in 2011 to complete his post-graduate training,

Following the completion of his training, Stephen joined our Jesmond team as an associate, and he is a certified Invisalign practitioner.

He has a special interest in putting nervous patients at ease when they visit the practice, and in providing aesthetic treatments (including in-surgery and home whitening) to boost patients’ confidence and help them to love their smiles.

In his spare time, Stephen enjoys sports, reading, travel, arts and crafts, and music. He also holds a first class Biology BSc (Hons) degree.

David Lawler
Dentistry

David provides the full range of NHS and private dental treatments.

David joined our Jesmond practice in 2010 after graduating from Newcastle University, where he qualified with a Merit in both academic and clinical dentistry. He completed his post-qualification training with us before becoming an associate at the practice.

He holds a Diploma of Membership of the Joint Dental Faculties at the Royal College of Surgeons of England (2012) and has completed the Astra Dental Implant training course in restoring dental implants.

David also studied for a Certificate in Facilitating Learning in Healthcare Practice (University of Central Lancashire, Distinction, 2013/14), which has prepared him for his current role as an educational trainer for foundation dentists.

He is a member of the British Dental Association (BDA), Local Dental Committee (LDC), and of the Joint Dental Faculties at the Royal College of Surgeons of England. From 2012 to 2016, he was a member the Young Dentists Committee (BDA).

David organises regular peer-led study club sessions for our dentists, and has been involved in the practice research IQUAD trial which educates patients on oral hygiene for the prevention and management of periodontal disease.

He is a certified Invisalign practitioner and has achieved excellent results for patients, creating whiter, straighter smiles with this barely visible orthodontic treatment. He has special interests in the provision of composite veneers, white fillings, tooth whitening (in-surgery and home), and periodontal therapy. 

In his leisure time, David enjoys taking his bulldog puppy Layla for walks. He is a keen musician and plays guitar in a local band, The Vellocette, with fellow dentist Richard Leck, as well as writing music and collecting vinyl records. He is building a collection of bourbon whisky and is a long-suffering Newcastle United fan and recent season ticket holder.

Matthew Joll
Dentistry

Matthew provides the full range of NHS and private dental treatments.

Matthew holds a BDS from Newcastle upon Tyne, MJDF RCS, and has completed an Implant Course at Sheffield University.

He completed his vocational training in Sunderland before joining our Stanley practice in 2002.

Matthew has been an educational trainer for foundation dentists for seven years and has a particular interest in sedation and implant work.

He also enjoys providing facial aesthetics as a member of our Honour Health Skin team.

Outside of work, Matthew has three children, which keep him busy. He also enjoys going to watch his old rugby team (Medicals RFC) play. When he gets the chance, he likes to play golf, and loves skiing.
