Here at Honour Health, we’re proudly supporting the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry (BSPD)’s national campaign, Dental Check By One (DCby1).
The aim of the campaign is to encourage parents and guardians to take their baby to the dentist before their first birthday. If a dentist examines a child’s mouth from this young age, they can check that the teeth are developing correctly, and they have the chance to identify problems early and prevent future decay. They can also give parents and guardians useful early advice about how to keep their child’s teeth healthy – and to show them how much baby teeth really do matter.
At the launch of the campaign, Claire Stevens, President of the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry, said: “This first visit to the dentist is an important opportunity for a child to start a life of positive dental care and for parents to get advice on how to keep their child’s teeth healthy and strong.”
Worryingly, NHS data in 2013/14 shows that over 66,800 children in England, Scotland and Wales under the age of 18 had a general anaesthetic to remove decayed teeth, and that 49% of five year olds and 58% of eight year olds are reported to have had experience of dental decay. The estimated cost to the NHS in 2015/16 of providing multiple extractions under general aesthetic in under 19s totalled £50.5 million a year.
At Honour Health, preventative dentistry is at the heart of what we do, and we want your child to grow up with healthy teeth, free of decay. We’ve been looking after the dental health and wellbeing of patients in the North East for over 30 years, and in that time we’ve treated several generations of the same families! We all love working with children, so we know how to help them have a fun, positive first experience at the dentist.
It’s never too early for your child to come to Honour Health. The sooner that they make that first visit, the sooner they can become comfortable with sitting in the chair and having their mouth and teeth checked. And remember – children’s NHS dental care is free of charge.
Alternatively, join our Honour Health Club! We offer a fantastic membership package called ‘Honour My Family’. Children under six go free of charge, and the whole family can be seen by the dentist of their choice for two dental health examinations and at least two hygiene appointments per year, at a time to suit them, including evening appointments (and Saturday appointments at our Jesmond and Ponteland practices). The package includes up to 20% off our private dental treatments, 10% off our skin treatments, worldwide dental insurance and much more. Find full details here
Here’s some fantastic feedback from our patients about their children’s appointments:
“Took my 19 month son for his first visit – everyone from reception through to the dentist were lovely and made the experience a positive one. As someone with a slight fear of the dentist, this positive introduction is incredibly important to me in setting up his expectations of future visits – thank you!”
“My husband, myself and two daughters all use this dental practice. I have found the staff to be friendly and efficient and have been happy with our dental treatment. When my daughters were younger the dentist was very child friendly, e.g. stickers for the girls and ‘checking’ their teddy’s teeth! Would definitely recommend this practice.”
