In the world of orthodontics, clear aligners have rapidly emerged as a popular and effective alternative to traditional metal braces. If you’ve been dreaming of a straighter smile without the discomfort and appearance of fixed braces, clear aligners might be the perfect solution.
What are clear aligners?
Clear aligners are a type of orthodontic treatment designed to straighten teeth using a series of custom-made, transparent plastic trays that fit snugly over your teeth. These aligners are almost invisible, offering a discreet way to achieve a straighter smile without the need for metal brackets or wires. At Honour Health we provide Invisalign treatment using their smart plastic clear aligners.
Benefits of clear aligners (Invisalign) over fixed braces
While traditional fixed braces have been effective for decades, clear aligners offer several advantages, making them a preferred option for many patients:
- Aesthetics: Clear aligners are (almost) invisible. This makes them an excellent choice for adults and teens who want a more discreet option for orthodontic treatment. Metal braces can be more noticeable and adults may feel self conscious with traditional metal braces, especially in professional or social settings.
- Comfort: Traditional braces come with wires and brackets that can cause irritation to the cheeks, lips, and gums. Clear aligners are made of smooth plastic, reducing the likelihood of discomfort and abrasions.
- Removability: One of the biggest advantages of clear aligners is that they are removable. You can take them out when eating, drinking, or brushing your teeth, allowing for more flexibility in your daily routine, although we do recommend wearing your aligners 22 hours per day!
- Improved oral hygiene: With clear aligners, maintaining proper oral hygiene is much easier. Since they are removable, you can brush and floss your teeth normally, without having to navigate around brackets and wires. This helps reduce the risk of cavities, gum disease, and plaque buildup during treatment. It is important that you always remove your aligners before putting them back in after eating.
The importance of long-term retention after orthodontics
Once your clear aligner treatment is complete, you’ll need to wear retainers to ensure that your teeth don’t shift back to their original positions. This phase of treatment is known as ‘retention’, and it is just as important as the active treatment phase. Without a retainer, teeth have a natural tendency to move back to their original positions over time due to the surrounding tissues and muscles.
There are different types of retainers, including:
- Fixed (bonded) retainers: A thin wire is bonded to the back of your teeth, typically in the front, to keep them in place long-term.
- Removable Retainers: Similar to clear aligners, these retainers can be taken out and worn as directed by your orthodontist, often at night. We recommend our patients wear Vivera retainers, which are made by Invisalign and hold the teeth in position with their smart plastic technology.
Wearing your retainer as instructed will help maintain your beautiful new smile for years to come. Failure to do so can result in teeth shifting back, requiring further orthodontic treatment in the future.
On 16 November 2024, our dentist Dr Matthew Quigley will be hosting an exclusive open day at Honour Health Jesmond for patients wishing to start their Invisalign journey. Patients will be offered £800 off Invisalign treatment with this exclusive offer.
